PARALYTIC SHELLFISH POISONING

CLOSURE ADVISORIES

The following areas have been closed to recreational shellfish harvesting due to Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, known as PSP or "Red Tide".

This health advisory was issued on December 3, 2009 and will remain in effect until further notice. Shellfish samples are collected every two weeks throughout the year. This message will be updated when conditions change.

  • The eastern most shoreline of Kitsap County from Point-no-Point south to Agate Passage and from Agate Passage east and south to South Beach Road on Bainbridge Island remains closed for butter clams only. This area includes Miller Bay, Port Madison Bay, and Blake Island including all inlets, bays, and Harbors

Maps of closure areas can be viewed at the Washington State Department of Health Recreational Shellfish Beach Closures page.

Toxic shellfish do not look or taste any different. The Paralytic Shellfish Poison is not destroyed by any method of preparation or cooking.

The symptoms of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning usually occur within one hour after eating toxic shellfish. Symptoms may include tingling and numbness of the lips and tongue, nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness and difficulty in breathing. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms after eating shellfish.

For more information, please contact the Health District’s Water Quality Program at (360) 337-5235, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM, or, for information on PSP or “Red Tide” closures outside of Kitsap County, contact the Washington State Red Tide Hotline at (800) 562-5632.
