Pollution Identification and Correction (PIC)
Projects are conducted by the Water Quality Program to determine
the causes and sources of bacterial water pollution in specific
geographical areas. Common sources of bacterial pollution include
failing on-site sewage systems and animal waste. The Water Quality
Program has developed a prioritized list of areas in Kitsap County
that are in need of a Pollution Identification and Correction project.
Projects are generally funded by the Kitsap County Surface and Stormwater
Management Program and grants from the State Department of Ecology.
The goals of a PIC project are to:
- Protect public health
- Protect shellfish resources
- Preserve, protect and restore surface water
quality.
The Water Quality Program is currently conducting
four major PIC projects in Kitsap County. These project include
the Upper Hood Canal PIC, Dyes Inlet Restoration Project, Barker
Creek PIC, and the Enetai Creek PIC. A new project is set to start
this Fall in the Jump off Joe Creek watershed. Smaller projects
are underway in Manchester, Steele Creek, Daniels Creek, Sacco Creek,
Illahee Creek, and Kitsap Creek.
The Water Quality Program is also maintaining
an ongoing presence in previous project areas including Port Gamble
Bay and Gorst. This effort is made to ensure that new sources of
bacterial contamination are identified and corrected as quickly
as possible. For more information on these or other projects, please
contact either Leslie Banigan (360) 337-5627 or Stuart Whitford
