What is Envirostars?

The Basics

Nationally recognized, the EnviroStars Program certifies businesses for reducing, recycling, and properly managing hazardous waste. The program was created in King County, Washington in 1995 and has expanded to include many additional counties in the Puget Sound region. The program became available in Kitsap County in 1997.

The goal of the EnviroStars Program is to give businesses incentives and recognition for reducing hazardous waste, while giving consumers an objective way to identify environmentally sound businesses.

Businesses certified by EnviroStars are given a two-to-five star rating based on their demonstrated commitment to reducing hazardous waste. The higher the star rating, the more proactive the business has been, and the more recognition they receive. Businesses with three stars or more are featured in success stories sent to local media, highlighted in radio and print advertisements, and nominated for environmental awards.

More than 80 businesses are currently certified by EnviroStars in Kitsap County.

Customers Want to Know

Public concern about the environment is higher than ever before.

Customers are starting to look beyond green products to find green companies.
Research shows that a company’s environmental reputation will rival quality and brand name as a criterion used by consumers.
By promoting your company’s environmental practices, you can attract new customers, reinforce repeat customers, and boost employee morale.

The Stars

The EnviroStars rating system is based on your company’s commitment to hazardous waste reduction. The more proactive you are, the more recognition you receive.

The EnviroStars Rating System

Two-Star
certified businesses manage hazardous waste properly, set a waste reduction goal and receive:

1) a Certificate of Recognition signed by their local elected official;
2) a window decal showing their EnviroStars rating ;
3) the EnviroStars logo to use in marketing efforts.

Three-Star certified businesses have reduced the amount of hazardous waste produced by changing practices, processes, or products. These businesses receive all of the above, and:

4) are highlighted in advertisements in local print media;
5) are highlighted in local radio advertisements.

Four-Star certified businesses have taken comprehensive actions to reduce waste in all aspects of their operations and receive all of the above, plus:

6) special recognition in local media advertisements;
7) a success story profile distributed to the public.

Environmental Achievement Awards

Five-Star certified businesses are leaders in preventing hazardous waste and recycling solid waste. These businesses receive all of the above, plus:
