"Homes that are not connected
to public sewer systems use onsite sewage systems to
treat and dispose of household wastewater (i.e., drainage
from sinks, showers, toilets, washing machines, etc.).
The majority of homes in Kitsap County use onsite sewage
systems to handle household wastewater.
There are two main categories of onsite
sewage systems: standard gravity systems and alternative
systems. Alternative onsite sewage systems utilize different
types of technologies to pre-treat the wastewater for
safer and more efficient disposal in the soils surrounding
a home. Because of the technology and mechanical processes
involved with alternative onsite sewage systems, they
require active oversite and regularly scheduled maintenance
to work properly.
There are many different types of
alternative systems in use, ranging from pressure distribution
and sandfilters to aerobic treatment units and drip
irrigation. Each type has its own unique maintenance
needs.
As of January 1, 2000, local
health codes require all owners of alternative onsite
sewage systems to contract with a certified maintenance
specialist to ensure that the required maintenance is
performed as needed. This website will summarize and
explain whys, whats, and hows of onsite sewage operation
and maintenance."
