Youth tobacco
prevention
Contact:
Roberta Kowald, Kitsap County Health District at:

Activities:
Activities are a great way to volunteer your time. In fact, you
may be able to get credit for your work as community service hours
or extra credit for a class. Talk to your teachers about the possibilities.
Peer Education:
You are trained to make team presentations to 4th grade students
about the dangers of tobacco. Younger kids and their teachers
give this program great reviews.
Compliance Checks:
Sale of tobacco to minors is illegal in Washington State. In cooperation
with the State Health Department, you are trained and accompanied
by staff, check compliance at local retailers. You must be between
the ages of 14 and 16 and have parental permission to participate.
The sale of tobacco products to minors in Kitsap County has been
reduced from 44% in 1994 to 6% in 1998!
Counter Advertising:
The Coalition sponsors poster contests, counter ad displays and
a Web page created by students to expose the lies behind tobacco
advertising and show the truth about tobacco addiction. Help us
spread the news.
Community Education:
You can host interactive games and hand out prizes to help make
education fun at health
fairs and substance abuse prevention events.
Benefits:
You can become part of a dynamic, youth-centered team and work
with others to make a difference. You'll receive leadership and
other training. It's great to use STAND! accomplishments on resumes
or college applications.
