Suicide Facts

National:

  • Someone in the United States completes suicide every 17 minutes.
  • For every 2 victims from a homicide there are 3 deaths from suicide.
  • Nationally, over half of all suicide deaths are from a firearm.
  • Females attempt suicide four times more often than men but . . . Males complete suicide five times as often.
  • For every person who suicides, there are at least 25 more who attempt it.
  • It is estimated that 775,000 people attempt suicide each year in the United States.
    An estimated 4.5 million Americans are survivors of suicide of a friend, family member, or loved one.
  • 80% of people complete suicide give some warning of their intention.

State:

  • Washington State’s suicide rate is the 18th highest in the nation.
  • From 1998-2002, 3,767 Washington State residents died by suicide.
  • In Washington State for every 1 victim of homicide there are 3 deaths by suicide.


Local:

  • The highest rate of suicide in Kitsap County is among "blue-collar" males ages 35-54.
  • Kitsap County’s suicide rate (13.5) is significantly higher than state (12.8) and the national level (11.0).
  • From 1999-2003, 158 Kitsap County residents took their own life.
  • Overall, firearms are used in 59% of all completed suicides.
    68% of all Kitsap County residents who die by suicide are not married.
  • 77.2% of suicides in this county are males.
