The Healthy Living Program provides an opportunity for the physical activity and nutrition coalition, KITSAP GETS ACTIVE to bring together community partners to promote active living through environmental and policy changes, Safe Routes to School training, outreach and education to promote healthy active lifestyles in Kitsap County.

  • Physical inactivity contributes to numerous physical and mental health problems and is responsible for an estimated 200,000 deaths per year. (DHHS, CDC (1996) Physical Activity and Health: A Report of the Surgeon General.)
  • People in activity-friendly environments are more likely to be physically active in their leisure time. Kitsap County Data on Adult and Youth Physical Activity
and Nutrition

Vision: Every Kitsap County resident will engage in a healthy and active lifestyle.

Goal:

1. To build community capacity to promote physical activity and nutrition is Kitsap County.
Objectives:
  a. Recruit and retain a broad-based coalition of
community partners.
  b. Hold quarterly coalition meetings to build community support for policies and programs to increase physical activity and nutrition in Kitsap County.
  c. Support current community activities and efforts related  to physical activity and nutrition. This can be accomplished through in kind and/or financial support).
  d. Obtain and assess available data (BRFSS and HYS).
2. To provide and promote community awareness, education and training to community providers, schools, parents, youth and the general public on physical activity and nutrition issues in Kitsap County.
Objectives:
  a. Provide Safe and Active Routes to School training and grant writing workshops.
  b. Develop and market a county-wide slogan and social marketing campaign.
  c. Develop a comprehensive email list to distribute local, state, and federal information on best practices and other information.
  d. Develop a website for Kitsap County physical activity and nutrition.
  e. Write and distribute media releases on physical activity and nutrition.
  f. Provide educational materials for community events and health fairs.
  g. Support schools in their physical activity and nutrition efforts.
3. To advocate for community policies for physical activity and  nutrition.
Objectives:
  a. Support creating successful active community environments
  b. Advocate for walking trails and community designs.


Accomplishments 2007

The Kitsap Gets Active Award was created to recognize outstanding leadership in the planning and execution of activities or events that promotes a healthy, active lifestyle to the citizens of Kitsap County.
