What Shots
Do Adults Need?
Adults may think that shots are kid stuff, but more adults die every
year from vaccine-preventable illnesses than children.
Immunizations provide protection against disease throughout our
lives.
It is important that adults discuss their immunzation history with
their health provider. Currently, the American College of Physicians
recommends the following immunizations for adults:
Flu:
Adults over 50, especially those over 65 should get a flu shot
every year. Flu shots are 70-90% effective in preventing the flu.
Pneumonia: Adults 65 or older should get a pneumonia shot. The pneumonia
vaccine is also recommended for other groups that have an increased
risk for pneumonia. Check with your physician for more information.
Tetanus: Adults should get a booster every ten years.
Diptheria: Usually given in combination with the Tetanus-Pertussis
vaccine. Adults need a booster every ten years.
Hepatitis:
Hepatitis is an infectious liver disease. There are safe and effective
vaccines for both hepatitis A and hepatitis B.
